In 2004 and 2005, trail enthusiasts, park and recreation leaders, government officials, planners, transportation authorities and economic development coordinators gathered to discuss trails and trail linkages in northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan.

Initially representatives met from individual counties to map existing, planned and “wish list” trails and greenways. In July 2005, representatives from 10 counties in northern Indiana and Southwestern Michigan convened for the Michiana Greenways and Trails Charrette to discuss multi-county and multi-state linkages. The outcome was a “vision” for regional greenways.

Dialogue continues between the various parties involved in the charrettes regarding strategies to move the regional trails and greenways vision forward.
