Sheriff William Redman
I began my career in 1994 with the St. Joseph County Police Department as a Special Deputy while working in the St. Joseph County jail. In 1995, I was promoted to the rank of Probationary Patrolman and successfully graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1995 (Class 95-120).
In 1996, I began working as a patrol officer and was assigned to different patrol beats throughout St. Joseph County. In the Fall of 1997, I was asked by Sheriff Speybroeck and his administration to become a D.A.R.E. Officer. I began teaching in the PHM School Corporation. At that time, there were a total of nine schools taught by myself and another officer.
I continued to teach D.A.R.E. for the next eighteen years. During the course of the eighteen years, I eventually supervised the unit and increased our schools from nine to eighteen schools throughout St. Joseph County (including PHM, LaVille Elementary, North Liberty Elementary, Walkerton Elementary, Holy Family, and St. John the Baptist School). Throughout my eighteen years as a D.A.R.E. Officer, I taught the anti-drug message to thousands of local school children. I also sponsored and volunteered at many after school programs throughout the community.
In addition to my role as a D.A.R.E. Officer I became the department public relations officer overseeing multiple events throughout the year. This included an annual law enforcement camp for local children, the "Do the Right Thing" program, an annual haunted hayride, D.A.R.E. golf outing, National Night Out, and the "Christmas with Cops" program through our local FOP Lodge #155.
In 2008, I was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and assigned as the departments Public Information Officer (PIO) working with local and national media outlets on a daily basis. I have continued this responsibility, but on a part-time basis. In July of 2010, I was appointed to the position of Assistant Chief of Police under Interim Sheriff John Botich, who replaced Sheriff Frank Canarecci, who retired. I held this appointment though December 31, 2010 until newly elected Sheriff Michael Grzegorek took office on January 1, 2011. As Assistant Chief, I oversaw the daily operations of the jail and of our court house security (South Bend, Mishawaka, County-City Building, and the Juvenile Justice Center).
In 2012, I accepted a supervisor position as a patrol sergeant supervisor on the road patrol. I worked as the second in command of the first detail patrol shift until 2015. I was then promoted to the rank of Lieutenant after a rigorous and lengthy testing process. I currently oversee the second detail patrol shift (20 officers), which answers the most calls for service daily.
I've been a member of our departments Honor Guard Unit since 1999, and currently supervise the unit. This unit participates in several events throughout the year including the presentation of colors, parades, and funerals of in the line-of-duty deaths of active police officer and of retired police officers. I, along with other members of this unit assisted in the presentation and dedication of our police memorial in front of the St. Joseph County Jail in May of 2012.
I also serve on the State of Indiana FOP Critical Incident Memorial Team. This team is made up of officers specially trained in handling critical incidents. This includes, any line-of-duty deaths of officers throughout the State of Indiana. Myself and other team members also participate in the annual National Law Enforcement Memorial held in Washington, D.C. each May during National Police Week.. I represent the only county police officer throughout the entire state of Indiana on this team.
In 2016, I became a member of the St. Joseph County Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) unit as an investigator/interviewer. This unit investigates all serious injury/fatal vehicles crashes throughout St. Joseph County.
Elected to Sheriff in November of 2018.

2011 St. Joseph County Chamber of Commerce Forty under 40 award.
I'm married to my wife Kimberly, of twenty-five years. Kim and I have four daughters, 26 year-old twins Kenzie and Kaitlyn, 24 year-old Karagan, and 20 year-old Kamryn. We also have a four year-old grandson Zeke.
