The St. Joseph County (Ind.) Police Department, currently led by Sheriff William Redman, is a department of nearly 300 individuals that was originally established in 1830.  Sheriff Redman was elected in November of 2018 and was sworn in on January 1, 2018. By law in Indiana the County Sheriff can only serve for two consecutive terms. 

By state law, the  department is not only responsible for routine police functions; it is responsible for serving civil warrants, and the staffing of a county jail, in addition to the protection of the three courthouses located within our County.

There are six  divisions within the department:  Detective Bureau, Civil, Warrants, Jail Division, and the Records Division.  Officers from the Department are also assigned to several local schools, including Clay High School in South Bend and Penn High School which serves Mishawaka and Granger. The department also has several specialty divisions such as S.W.A.T, a Dive Team, K-9 Unit, and Street Crimes.

St. Joseph County is located in north-central Indiana and is home to 250,000 residents.  St. Joseph County also contains more than seven institutions of higher learning, including St. Mary’s College, Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame.

The Department has 116 sworn law enforcement officers.  The Road Patrol Division runs three shifts; there are at least eight  patrol officers per shift who are responsible for covering over 467 square miles at any one time. 

The jail can house up to 831 inmates which is staffed by nearly 145 correctional officers. 

We also employ approximately 45 support staff personnel.
